Candid & Authentic Engagement Photos in Kansas City
If you are looking for candid engagement photos in Kansas City, you probably think of the session as a photoshoot. Nice photos of the two of you where you look authentic, maybe for your save-the-dates. That is one way to look at it. Here is mine, and it is why I rarely sell engagement sessions on their own.
I am Etienne, a documentary wedding photographer based in Lee's Summit. The session's real value is not the photos, it is what happens between us before your wedding
What a candid engagement session actually looks like
We start with a conversation so we can build something that is yours. We spend a few hours together around the Kansas City metro, in a place that means something to you, your favorite bar or restaurant, an activity you love, your dog, whatever comes up when we talk. I have prompts and little games to keep the energy up. You stop thinking about the camera. I catch what happens between you.
Katrina and Jordan started in Chiefs outfits behind the painted walls in Crossroads, changed at their house for photos with their dogs, and finished at Tailleur, a French restaurant.
Most couples say the same thing at the end. That was fun. Not fun like a photoshoot. Fun like spending some quality time together, where nothing is asked of you except to enjoy each other. It usually surprises them.
Allison put it this way: “We had so much fun taking pictures that it felt like a date night being photographed.”
Why the session matters more than the photos
What "candid" actually means when I use it
Where we shoot in Kansas City
The photos are good, (and very cute like my wife says) and you will use them for your save-the-dates, your invitations, your wedding website, or a print on your wall. And the photos are not even the main benefit.
What you are getting is more authentic photos during your wedding day. By the time I walk into your wedding, we are not strangers. We have laughed together, tried things together, figured out how we work together. On your wedding day the couple photos go faster so you can go enjoy your guests. The camera stops being something you notice. Your guests notice you are relaxed and they forget I am here too. Everything runs smoother because we did this first.
And if you are not sure yet whether we are a fit, a few hours together is how you find out. That is a lot lower stakes than deciding on your wedding day
Candid means I create the conditions where something real can happen, then I am ready when it does. This is where my documentary approach to photography shines. I might suggest something to say to each other, or a prompt. I am not directing you into a pose. I am setting a scene where you get to be yourselves inside it.
Rebekah described it well after her session: "His candid approach really captured our authenticity as we explored KC together."
Anywhere that means something to you. The Crossroads walls, the Nelson-Atkins, Loose Park, the Plaza, your neighborhood, your favorite restaurant, your apartment. If you want ideas, I keep a running list of locations I like around the metro.
